Panda Managed Office Protection for Small & Medium BusinessThe increasing number of malicious threats is making security protection even more urgent and complex for today's businesses. Malware is infecting computers at a rate that is increasing exponentially. PandaLabs has received more malware last year than in the previous 16 years combined. To complicate matters further, malware is becoming very sophisticated and is more silent, making it even more difficult to combat. The longer it remains hidden, the more damage it can cause in the form of identity theft, economical and productivity losses, and other malicious actions. Small and medium businesses (SMBs) face many of the same risks and regulations as larger organizations, but are often constrained by much smaller IT budgets. In many cases, their limited resources are not enough to achieve a sufficient level of security. But the current malware landscape makes it essential for SMBs to have a full set of maximized capabilities for malware detection. In addition to tight budgets for hardware and software, SMBs usually have a lack of skilled resources dedicated to protecting and managing the network security. By necessity, they tend to invest all possible resources in their core business activities, consequently limiting the amount of budget and human resources committed IT security. -

However, now that so many computers have an "always-on" connection to the Internet, there is an unprecedented amount of malware designed to take advantage of this global and ever-expanding, public network. To counter these threats, ESET is continually introducing effective countermeasures: not just signature updates for the detection of known malware, but also the industry's most advanced heuristics for countering new threats. This is backed up by ThreatSense.Net, a global system for monitoring evolving threats. ESET's latest release is its most comprehensive product to date: ESET Smart Security 4. ESET Smart Security 4 is a thoroughly integrated anti-malware solution providing endpoint security for home use and businesses of all sizes. ESET Smart Security 4 features the and precision of ESET NOD32 Antivirus with its powerful ThreatSense engine, and combines it with custom-engineered firewall and antispam modules. -
Essential Security Against Evolving ThreatsSecurity is no longer optional and has become an absolute need for the successful running of today's businesses. However, the selection of the right partner is crucial to ensure complete protection from current and future threats. Traditionally, security solutions follow a tedious process whereby a new vulnerability is identified by the vendor, a new signature to neutralise that vulnerability is created and tested, and finally relies on end users to deploy these signature updates on a regular basis. This process, despite being partially automated in most cases, introduces an unacceptable time lag and can be prone to errors as even signatures can be flawed and expose the system to new threats. This approach has proven to be insufficient in today's environment due to its reactive nature and its lack of protection from threats unknown to the vendor. Therefore, businesses cannot rely on this reactive approach and need more proactive measures in place for total protection against evolving threats, such as modern viruses, spyware and phishing attacks. Security vendors track the time between the discovery of a vulnerability and the release of attacks exploiting that vulnerability. Most vendors and clients are secretly terrified of a phenomenon know as a "zero exploit." -
Free but Fake: Rogue Anti-malwareMost antivirus products are commercial and typically offer, as is the case with ESET solutions, free trial versions for a 30-day period. This limitation is the perfect excuse for criminals to recommend their "free and magical" antivirus software which guarantees to solve problems that the user does not really have. These kinds of programs are called "Rogue Anti-Malware" or "Purportedly Protective Programs" and their creators want users to download them in order to infect their systems, while believing that they are protecting themselves. In many cases, a Social Engineering technique is used to trick the user into downloading a malware application in the belief that they will receive a product which is both desirable and free.. Nowadays, there are several scenarios in which these programs may be introduced: 1. A free solution for a specific malicious program is offered on a website. Once the user downloads and installs the product, the user's system is (or appears to be) disinfected but other types of malicious software are installed, such as spyware and adware. 2. The user meets with the same scenario, but in this case is notified of an infection that (may or may not be real) and if the decides to clean the system, the program demands the registration of the software and the payment of a set fee. -
Top Computer Threats in the United Kingdom - January 2010As shown by the ESET ThreatSense.Net analysis, the variants of the Conficker worm have dominated the threat landscape in the United Kingdom. Together, they accounted for almost 10% of all infections detected during the first month of 2010. Exploiting a Windows Server Service vulnerability, Conficker uses various methods of entering the system, while INF/Conficker infects removable media and is activated upon insertion of the media into the computer. Occupying second place is INF/Autorun, yet another threat misusing the Windows autorun function. It modifies the text file autorun.inf, found on removable media to execute a harmful application upon insertion. The third position was taken by Win32/PSW.OnLineGames, a regular occurrence in ESET's United Kingdom threat reports. In January, the password-stealing Trojan scored a share of 2.93% of all detections. Finally, Win32/Agent placed fourth with 2.05%. The label Agent is used to mark a group of malicious applications designed to expose sensitive information once they infect the system. About ThreatSense.Net ThreatSense.Net collects anonymous statistical information packets about the types of infiltrations detected on the users' workstations. Thanks to this information, the ESET Virus Lab has access to real-time accurate and relevant information about the most wide-spread infiltrations. The infiltrations detected by the analysis are then tabulated, with the update against malware issued before it can spread or mutate into a different variant. -
3 Critical Qualities to consider when switching Antivirus SoftwareAre you in search of the best Antivirus experience for small to mid-sized businesses? This white paper simplifies the research process and provides shortcuts to resources that will save you time and money when selecting a new Antivirus Security Software. As part of this experiential approach, we surveyed a number of potential customers in the business sector about how they actually use antivirus software on a day-to-day basis. We also checked their attitudes towards the products they are currently using in order to calculate both the sunk and hidden costs of antivirus use. The threats from viruses have pretty much disappeared and have been replaced by Trojans, BOTs, Rootkits, Spyware, Scareware, and Crimeware, all generally categorized as Malware. There was more Malware released last year than in all the years prior to that, combined. It is no secret that it takes more than Antivirus software to defend the network. Layered Security, which includes training people, processes changes, products and services, provides the best chance at protecting the network. This paper specifically addresses the Antivirus Software Layer and selecting the best solution for your business. Any solution by itself cannot do the job so it makes sense to find the available solutions for each threat category. -

As use of the Web continues to grow, virus outbreaks and other forms of Web-borne threats known as `malware' continue to grow as well. Current security systems such as IDS, traditional firewall, or anti-virus, while providing vital security, were not designed to combat software code targeted at individual organizations or cleverly hidden inside seemingly harmless Web access protocols. While organizations need the Web, they need to be protected from it as well. Anti-virus (A/V) vendors have doubled their signatures in less than two years in an attempt to keep pace with the increasing trends of malware. But they can't keep up because malware is now designed to attack specific businesses and systems instead of causing general harm to the public Internet. And their solutions are still a viable option for stopping known viruses and threats, for unknown threats posed by targeted attacks, the window of time between an outbreak and the arrival of a new signature leaves individual organizations exposed. -
